Eco-Friendliness as a key to healthy living
I’m going to start things off by letting you in on a little secret:
Health and eco-friendly living really do go hand-in-hand!
We are, after all, an integral part of the natural world, and, despite our incredible technological advances, we still need to abide by the rules of Mother Nature. When you think about it, most of the things that are harmful to the environment just so happen to also damage our bodies. Harmful emissions, air and water pollution, plastic waste, chemicals, and toxins are just as bad for us, as they are for most other mammals. This simple principle can also be applied to our psychology – the things that make us feel calm, happy or content are generally necessary for our long-term longevity. Nature, you see, has its ways of dropping subtle (or, oftentimes – not subtle at all) hints as to what we’re supposed to be doing to thrive.
Leading a happy and positive life is intricately connected to all aspects of your daily routine. And yes, we can be somewhat content if our basic needs are met, but it goes well beyond that! We need to have not only shelter and access to a steady supply of food and water, but also a clean, positive, and uplifting environment.
A couple of years ago, I came across a few books about eco-friendliness. I got to reading, and, for the first time, I was able to truly appreciate the harm that we, as a civilisation, are doing to nature. I found myself longing for a better, cleaner and safer world. After that, it wasn’t long until I came to the conclusion that I’m actually doing myself and my entire company a disservice by not actively working towards making this dream a reality. I am, after all, an experienced business leader. And if there is one thing that business has taught me, it’s that dreams and plans will never come true unless you’re ready to roll up your sleeves and get to work.
I took my own advice, and I started small. I began gradually removing plastic products from my home, and I replaced them with sustainable and reusable alternatives.
I stopped using disposable bowls, bags, boxes, throw-away cups and cutlery, and I started carrying my own reusable straws and utensils while traveling. One thing that’s been a constant annoyance, however, has been plastic bottles. Even after discontinuing my own usage of them, they continued to be an issue – we do need to drink water outside of our homes after all. And, since cutting down on water consumption isn’t really an option (proper hydration is absolutely vital for your health and wellbeing), I started looking for alternative solutions. 2020 is already upon us and we’re faced with the start of a new decade. Hopefully, a greener, safer and healthier decade. Considering the dire environmental situation that we’re all faced with, I sincerely hope that at least a few people out there remembered to add something about eco-friendliness to their new years’ resolutions.
We are, after all, a part of nature, and it is our duty to protect it. When you really think about it, we humans are one of the most amazing and intricate creatures to have ever walked this earth! Yet we’re also the ones who have done the most damage to mother nature. And if this isn’t reason enough to take an eco-friendly vow, I don’t know what is…
Well, here’s something else that you might have not thought about – health and success. With the risk of coming off as somewhat boring, I’m going to go ahead and quote a saying that I’m sure you’ve heard a thousand times already:
Health is Wealth
As a matter of fact, I’d go even farther than that. I’d say that without health, wealth is not only much harder to enjoy, but also very difficult to amass. We are at our most productive when we’re feeling happy and healthy. Even a simple, short-lived headache is enough to throw a spanner in the works, and dramatically decrease your productivity at the office. And don’t even get me started on the more serious issues which can result from bad habits like smoking or drinking often!
But how does eco-friendly living fit into the picture? Well, to put it plainly – the things that are bad for nature tend to be bad for us as well. Air and water pollution, plastics, toxins, and chemicals have a devastating impact on both the environment and our own health. To me, the solution seems all too obvious:
If you want to be happy and productive, you need to be healthy. And if you want to be healthy, you should strive to lead a cleaner, greener, and eco-friendlier life!
What’s that? You’re a grown adult, you say? Do you already know how to take care of yourself just fine? Well okay then, let me ask you this:
- Do you know how and when to drink water? (Hint – yes, both the how and the when matter. A lot!) Do you know how water affects your body and how to get the most out of it?
- Do you know what to eat and when to eat it? (Hint – you don’t need to be a professional athlete to care about your diet!)
- Do you know how big of an impact breathing properly can have on your health and productivity? Do you know how to leverage that?
